We Believe...1. The scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired word of God, infallible in it's truth, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of mankind, and the Divine and ultimate authority in all matters of faith and practice. 2. In one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.3. That Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He willingly died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of the Father, He is our High Priest and our Advocate.4. That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict people of sin, regenerate the believing sinner and indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godlly living and service. 5. That mankind was created in the image of God, but, by disobedience, fell into sin and is therefore spiritually lost and separated from God and only through the regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and eternal spiritual life be obtained.6. That the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provides the only grounds for justification and salvation for all who believe. Only those who receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and become eternal children of God. 7. That water baptism and the Lord's supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church in the present age. They are not, however, to be regarded as means of salvation. 8. That the true Church is composed of all persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the Body of Christ of which He is the Head.9. In the personal and imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this "Blessed Hope" had a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.10. In the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgement and everlasting conscious punishment. t

Transforming Ordinary People into Extraordinary ChristiansWe believe God has called us to have the common goal of transforming. Transforming lives. That should be the heart throb of everything we do. If should be the core of every program, the goal of every class, the motivation of every person and the essence of every activity. Which is why our mission statement is simply, Transforming ordinary people into extraordinary Christians. In everything we do, we should be asking How should I do this to have the maximum effect in a positive way on the lives of other people? Through God’s power we should work with others in order to bring them into a life transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. Trying to grow them and ourselves into Christ likeness. That sets for us a goal we can measure. Life transformation, change for the better. Let’s start asking of every plan, every program, every activity, every function….. How can I improve this so that it brings positive change into people’s lives? Let’s do it all for Jesus, let’s transform people into extraordinary Christians. We believe, in the process, we too will be transformed into His likeness. By the power of Jesus may we be used by Him to transform ordinary people into extraordinary Christians. Let us transform lives!

FBC Youth To see our youth check out the photo galleryThe First Baptist Youth is a great community for jr. high and high school aged kids. In our group, students can find significance. Each one can see how they personally connnect to Jesus Christ, and how to relate well with each other. Since this time of life has a large impact on their adult experience, then we desire for these young men and women to understand God"s word, to develop faithfulness in thier lives, and to be involved in committed friendships. These elements will help produce a good foundation for their Christian life. The Youth group meets on Wednesday night from 6:30 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. The church serves dinner at 5:30 p. m., in which all our students are welcome to participate. On Sundays, the youth also have Sunday School at 9:30 a. m. and in the evenings there is S. N. A. C. (Sunday Night After Church), which starts at 6:00 p. m. and finishes at 7:30 p. m. Church History The first official record of the First Baptist Church of Newton was organized on July 19, 1877. A notice appeared in the Kansas (Newton) Republican Newspaper, formerly the Harvey County News: “Baptists Are Requested to Meet in the Presbyterian Church at 3 PM Sunday”. On that date, enough interest was evident to call a meeting for organization, and at that time, 17 citizens became charter members. These early pioneers were the beginning of the First Baptist Church. There were four denominations in the area at the time. The location of the first permanent building was in the second block west of Main Street, on the north side of 5th Street. The cost of the material required for its construction was approximately $250.00 exclusive of freight and labor. The Santa Fe Railway Company made no charge for hauling the freight. Practically all the labor required in erecting the building was donated by members and others. As forecast by Rev. Merrifield, the church grew rapidly and the need for a larger place of worship became evident. Shortly after the Merrifields left for another field of service, it was decided to build a new building. The original building was sold and has been used by a total of eight congregations. It is currently housing the People’s Bible Baptist Church on the southwest corner of 12th Street and Logan. Ground was purchased at the corner of Sixth and Poplar, and, in 1884, construction began on the new church building. While the second building was under construction, the congregation maintained regular services. They first met in the Methodist Church, then located at Broadway and Poplar. Later, they met in a skating rink on the corner of Sixth and Plum Streets. The new building was finished and dedicated that same year. It cost $12,000, exclusive of the bell. The bell placed in the belfry tower of the church was a gift of Mrs. Clara Auld. The clear bell tone called members to worship, according to tradition. It now sits unused on the roof of the education wing. The sermon of dedication was delivered by Rev. Connally, a representative of the State Convention. The church’s membership and influence continued to grow. In July 1923 the church elected a building committee to begin a plan for a new church building. It was decided that when the amount in the building fund totaled $15,000.00, the old building should be demolished and construction of the new building would be started. Wrecking of the old building began in April 1925. The cornerstone of the new building was laid on August 19, 1925. The last Sunday in March 1925 was the last time they met in the old buliding. The first service in the new building was held the first Sunday in April, 1926. The new building was complete and ready dedication on June 19, 1927.
Rev. Tareila, was ordained in 1974 by the Southern Baptist Convention. His ordination was recognized by the American Baptist Churches of the USA in 1985. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Philadelphia Biblical University, a Masters in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and has two years of Doctorate studies at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary, Portland Oregon. His primary specialties are interpreting the faith, pastoral care, preaching, and spiritual life development. He also possesses skills in conflict management, counseling, nurturing the fellowship and worship preparation and leading. His senior pastorate experience began in 1977 at the Calvary Bible Fellowship Church of Scranton PA. He has also served as senior pastor of the Victor Baptist Church, Victor, IA., the First Baptist Church, Wathena KS., and First Baptist Church, of New Bethlehem, PA.Rev. Tareila, who prefers to be addressed as "Pastor," says that he believes the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God and that his ministry stresses accurate expository Bible teaching that is clear, simple, and applied to the needs of people.Rev. Tareila also says... "A successful church must be a team ministry of the pastor(s) and others who attend the church working together for Christ. A pastor should not be a dictator, and cannot do the work of the church alone." He also says... "Ministry always involves loving people. Christians need regular doses of encouragement in a negative world that is so often trying to tear them down."
